How Long Does it Take for a Scar to Heal?

How Long Does it Take for a Scar to Heal?

The short answer, of course, is that it depends on the scar. The correct answer is that it depends on a great many factors, including things like the person’s age and overall health, what environmental factors the scar is exposed to during healing (such as smoking or sunlight), the technique used by the surgeon if the scar is a surgical scar, and whether the wound was infected at any point during healing - to name just a few of the many things that can affect how long a scar takes to heal! It also matters what caused the scar in the first place and how extensive the injury was.

However, there are some general guidelines a patient can go by to help him or her know what to expect. For the first few weeks after a wound closes, the scar can appear red and raised; it gradually fades and softens over the next several months. Expect to see the final result in at least a year, sometimes two. That is how long it can take for a scar to stop changing or improving on its own. However, even after this point, there are methods you can utilize to encourage the scar to heal even further for a less obvious and more pleasing appearance. In children, the final appearance of the scar may not be visible for several years.

Avoid Infection
The first and most important thing you can do to help your scar heal as quickly as possible is to prevent the wound from getting infected. Any infection will delay healing and possibly worsen the scar’s final appearance. Make sure to keep the incision or injury site completely clean and follow your doctor’s instructions, if applicable, for wound care during the healing period.

Exercise, Massage the Scar Area, and Avoid Smoking
Making sure the scar gets plenty of oxygen is another effective way to make sure it heals quickly. Smoking actually works in two ways to delay scar healing. First, it decreases oxygen in the blood, which in turn decreases the amount of oxygen that gets to the wound. This oxygen is extremely important for complete healing, so you should be doing everything you possibly can to increase the wound’s oxygen supply – such as exercising. Not only does smoking reduce the amount of oxygen the wound receives – and thereby delay its healing – but it also increases the risk of the wound becoming infected. And keep the scar out of the sun; the sun can cause a scar to darken or redden.

Use Ingredients Proven to Promote Scar Healing
You can further speed scar healing by using a product designed to fade and soften scars. Avoid products that contain hydroquinone – although commonly used in scar healing, it is known to be potentially irritating and dangerous. Also avoid fragrances, preservatives, and alcohol in your scar healing product. Instead look for natural ingredients that are proven to help scars heal and improve their appearance, such as silicone, aloe vera, licorice, and vitamin C.

Be patient – scar healing is a slow process. However, you can move it along as quickly as possible by following these tips.

Does Onion Extract Get Rid of Scars?

Does Onion Extract Get Rid of Scars?

Many people have scars they want to get rid of, whether the scar is new or it has been there for years. So it’s understandable that people try many different methods of scar healing. Part of the problem is that there is so much conflicting information out there that it can be hard to know what is accurate and what isn’t. Choose the wrong product, and the results will be disappointing. At best, you’ve wasted money and your scar remains unchanged; at worst, you could actually worsen your scar, damage your skin or overall health, or have an allergic reaction. This is why it’s so important to separate truth from speculation when choosing skin care products, and to choose products that are safe, natural, and known to be effective.

Many purported scar treatments on the market contain onion extract. Proponents claim that onion extract reduces redness and decreases scar size. Therefore, studies have been conducted that examine whether these beliefs are true. The results of the studies have not been favorable. In studies such as this one, where patients applied topical products to scars regularly for a set amount of time, no benefit was shown in the group using onion extract.

For starters, onion extract has not been shown to be any more effective than plain petroleum jelly. That is, not very effective at all, since neither offers any real benefit beyond moisturizing. Further, researchers have been unable to show that onion extract reduces redness or itching, or that it improves the appearance of hypertrophic or other scars. In addition, onion is acidic and could possibly even cause damage to the skin. Similarly, onion extract shows no real benefit when used on stretch marks, either.

If you want to use onion extract in your scar healing routine, you’d be better off eating it. Onions contain powerful antioxidants and have a healthy dose of vitamin C, both of which are good for scar healing. No one who wants a scar to heal should smoke, since smoking reduces oxygen in the bloodstream and therefore inhibits healing – but in patients who smoke anyway, antioxidants are especially important. Foods with antioxidant properties such as beans, berries, and many other fruits and vegetables should be part of any scar healing regimen. Onions certainly have a place in an overall nutritional strategy for improving scars, but when applied topically, the extract appears to be generally useless.

You will get much better results with a product that contains proven scar healers like dimethicone silicone. Staying out of the sun, avoiding smoking, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet will all work to diminish scars and improve the overall appearance of your skin. The best choice for a scar healing product is one that contains ingredients that scientific studies have proven to be effective and safe, combined with lifestyle choices that promote overall health and healing, as well as good circulation.

The verdict? Stick with these tips for the best result, and don’t bother with the onion extract.

How to Get Rid of Burn Scars

How to Get Rid of Burn Scars

A burn can happen at any time. Whether an accidental burn from an encounter with a curling iron or the kitchen stove, these burns are generally superficial. They will sting and hurt, so treating them immediately is a good idea. Scars that develop from a superficial burn can vary in degrees of severity. Generally, a burn scar will become discolored compared to the surrounding normal skin, and it can also become much firmer. Like any other scar, burn scars can be painful, and unattractive. Proper treatment can help how the burned skin heals and improve the final scar appearance.

Common Treatments for Burns
Some doctors might recommend the application of silicone sheets directly to the healed burn on a daily basis. These silicone sheets remain on for most of the day. Some patients find silicone sheets cumbersome, so using a silicone gel can be a more convenient option, especially during the day. The effectiveness of silicone in treating burn scars has been proven the most effective in treating scars. Silicone gel works just as well as the sheets, so it makes more sense for some people to use it because the application is much easier.

If you are going to be out in the sun, make sure you protect your skin by wearing a hat, clothing, and sunscreen to keep the scar covered. If a burn scar is exposed to the sun’s harmful rays, it can become darker, which will make it even more noticeable.

Ingredients used in Common Burn Treatments
Aloe Vera: This ingredient is known for healing wounds, decreasing inflammation, providing stimulation for the growth of new skin by using amino acids, and promoting healing within the skin layers.

Essential Fatty Acids: Safflower Seed Oil contains Linoleic Acid and Sunflower Seed Oil contains Oleic Acid. Both of these fatty acids are essential for the regeneration of the lipid biolayers, which are necessary for skin moisture. They also help to improve wound healing, and improve elasticity in scars. Additionally, these two fatty acids help to control the production of prostaglandins, which is one of the main building blocks for skin. A disturbance in the production of prostaglandin will result in poor healing and these fatty acids guard against such disturbances. They can also help to lighten darkening skin pigments.

Licorice: This ingredient is known to have anti-inflammatory properties; it aids in the acceleration of skin renewal. It also helps to lighten up brown spots, which include melasma and abnormal, dark skin pigmentation. It also has anti-acne effects.

Vitamin C: There are things you should consider when it comes to selecting products that use vitamin C for scar treatment. For example, choose a product that offers a stable form of vitamin C such as Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, or Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate. In skin care products, today, these are the two most stable forms of vitamin C. There are many benefits to using vitamin C, such as the encouragement of healthy collagen formulation after a skin injury, such as a burn. Vitamin C will also help to increase hydration, which is helpful in healing scars. It is also good for decreasing redness and inflammation.

Which Scars Are Permanent?

Which Scars Are Permanent?

The simple answer? Most scars are permanent.

While you may not be able to remove scars completely, you can get rid of scars, per say, by using a scar treatment in combination with the right diet, exercise and massage.

Fading a Scar

The ultimate goal for most people is to reduce the appearance of their scar. There are many ways to help a scar fade over time and one of the biggest contributors to scar fading is nutrition. By having the right balance of nutrients, the body is able to supply the scar tissue with the nutrients required to heal properly and reduce the appearance of the scar. Just as it is important to ingest these nutrients, regular application of creams with vital nutrients is also helpful to minimize your scar’s appearance.

Exercise is another element that can help fade scars. Giving the muscles, ligaments, and skin movement around the scar is going to help reduce the amount and severity of the scar tissue; thus, reducing the appearance.

Beware of the Sun

Some people are under the misconception that regardless of whether or not a scar is new or old, they can simply sit in the sun to even it out or attempt to hide it under a tan. Nothing could be further from the truth. The last thing a scar needs is exposure from the sun.

Scar tissue is not like normal skin. When it comes to how it feels, they way it functions, and its overall appearance it is quite inferior. Old and new scars alike are prone to sunburn, especially when they are brand new, they are less resistant to ultraviolet rays and can permanently be darkened with too much exposure from the sun. This is even truer for people who have dark skin complexions.

Read: How Does the Sun Affects Scars?

To prevent these things from happening, you should take extra care when preparing to be in the sun. All year long you should make every effort to protect your scars from direct sun exposure.

  • Sun block with high SPF should be applied directly onto the scar.
  • Using a water resistant sun block is important, but remember to re-apply every 2 hours.
  • If you are unable to avoid the sun entirely, you should wear sun protective clothing over scars. Clothing with a high UPV of 50 would be just right.

Avoid Smoking

When it comes to skin healing, smoking is known to be linked to complications. Typically, plastic surgeons recommend that at least a month before any plastic surgery procedure, patients give up smoking.

Read: How Does Smoking Affect Scar Healing?

When any cuts or wounds occur, scars simply are a part of the healing process. They need to mature for healing to be completed. This can take many months to happen. Infections can be related to smoking as one of the complications to healing. Scars may worsen if infections should develop.

For those that are looking to reduce the appearance of their scars, avoiding certain behaviors is going to be the best way to make the scar less noticeable. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will help promote healing and diminish the look of any scar, as well as using your scar treatment regularly and consistently.
