Does Licorice Extract Get Rid of Scars?

Grown mainly in southern Europe and China, “licorice” means “sweet root.” This perennial plant grows up to five feet tall with a vertical root. Licorice is not difficult to grow, but it takes several years before the roots can be collected. The main ingredient in licorice is actually a sweetener which is many times sweeter than sugar.

Licorice may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about scar treatment, but in fact, licorice is excellent for lightening hyperpigmentation, melasma, and dark scars and evening out skin tone. Licorice has natural properties that allow it to reduce dark spots and diminish the appearance of scars, and it has the added benefit of being a natural ingredient that carries none of the health risks of chemicals such as hydroquinone.

Licorice is often used in traditional Chinese medicine to harmonize ingredients in herbal formulas. Scars, uneven skin tone, and dark spots caused by acne or sun exposure can all be greatly improved by using a product that contains licorice extract. Licorice extract is a highly effective, safe, and natural ingredient which may prevent the need to resort to more drastic measures such as laser skin resurfacing.

Licorice contains several components which have positive skin effects. Due to its makeup, licorice is effective at skin brightening and lightening, improving acne, and oil production regulation, as well as having antibacterial and antioxidant properties. This versatile extract is also a strong anti-inflammatory agent.

Licorice extract works to fade hyperpigmentation by inhibiting melanin activity, thereby producing whitening of the skin. However, skin whitening is just one of licorice’s beneficial properties. It has also been found to have sunscreen-type properties that help protect against harmful UV rays and reduce skin sensitivity. This keeps skin looking younger and helps minimize or prevent hyperpigmentation or scar worsening. Licorice is also safe for sensitive areas because it is a natural, gentle ingredient.

Another condition for which licorice extract can be used is melasma, which causes patches of dark pigmentation on the face. This discoloration is typically seen in pregnant women or in women who have recently given birth; it can also be caused by certain drugs such as hormonal contraception, some antibiotics, or even anti-malarial drugs. Melasma may be transient or it may persist for years – but licorice is an effective remedy.

It is important to understand that most scars cannot be erased completely by any means – most scars are permanent. However, certain products have been shown to have dramatic lightening and minimizing effects on scars, and licorice is one of those ingredients. When applied topically, is has proven skin brightening effects, lightens dark pigmentation, and can reduce the visibility of scars dramatically. When used in combination with other proven ingredients, such as dimethicone silicone, licorice can make a huge difference in how your scar looks and how you feel about your appearance. Wound healing is a natural biological process in the human body. For a wound to heal completely, several different stages of healing must take place. Under ideal circumstances, this happens relatively quickly and without complications. Oxygenation
Oxygen is critically important in all wound-healing processes. It helps prevent infection and promotes several different healing processes. When circulation is poor and the wound does not receive sufficient oxygen, healing is greatly impaired. Proper oxygen levels can be maintained by exercising regularly and not smoking. Infection
Your skin keeps many organisms from entering your body, but when the skin is injured, those organisms are granted access to the underlying tissues. Even a minor infection can cause a wound to take longer to heal and affect the final appearance of the scar; an invasive infection can produce prolonged inflammation which, in extreme cases, cause the wound to enter a chronic state and fail to heal. For these reasons, it is extremely important to follow your doctor’s instructions closely after surgery or otherwise keep a wound clean and free of infection.

Age
Age is a major factor in wound healing – specifically, advanced age is a risk factor for delayed healing. Older people commonly notice that their wounds take longer to heal, but delayed wound healing is not the same as impaired wound healing or complications with wound healing. Older individuals may have delayed collagen-producing responses and other wound healing processes may also be slower. Exercise is one factor that can improve an older adult’s wound healing; this may be due to anti-inflammatory responses in the wound. Being aware of potential problems and taking proactive steps like exercising, eating well, and keeping a wound clean can improve the odds of a wound healing quickly and normally.

Stress
It has long been known that psychological stress can have a physical impact. One way in which stress can impact a person physically is by causing a delay in wound healing. Sometimes stress can take the form of a negative emotional state such as anxiety or depression, which can also affect physiological processes like wound healing – or behavioral patterns that can affect wound healing. For example, if a person is depressed, they may be more likely to neglect proper wound care, or if a person is anxious they may be more likely to smoke. Stress can also affect things like sleep patterns and diet, factors that also play important roles in wound healing.

These are just a few of the factors that affect wound healing; others include nutrition, whether a person smokes, diabetes, and exposure to UV rays, among others. Being informed and following healthy guidelines for proper healing can give you the best possible outcome when it comes to the healing of your wound and any lasting scarring.

Does Vitamin E Get Rid of Scars?

Since it is known as a powerful antioxidant, vitamin E has gained tremendous popularity as an ingredient in many skin care products, and is often touted as being effective at fading scars.

However, the truth is that in the vast majority of cases, up to 90%, vitamin E either has no discernible effect on scars, or it can even worsen their appearance.

When people notice improvement in their scars after using vitamin E, more often than not, it is simply hydration of the skin. While skin hydration is important to scar healing, it only plays one part in the proper healing of scars. However, vitamin E can also have some undesirable side effects, such as contact dermatitis, with itching, redness, and swelling. Contact dermatitis is seen in up to a third of people who use vitamin E on their skin. This makes many dermatologists, pediatricians, and other skin care professionals recommend avoiding using vitamin E on scars.

Vitamin E is often found in products that also contain other questionable ingredients, such as hydroquinone, kojic acid, preservatives, and fragrances. These ingredients have all been shown to be potentially harmful and are best avoided in scar treatment.

Vitamin E has been used in attempts to treat almost every imaginable skin condition. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence, of course, that vitamin E speeds healing and fading of scars. As a result, many people use topical vitamin E to help improve their scars after surgery or other skin injuries.

A recent study examined whether vitamin E actually had any effect on scar healing or the cosmetic appearance of scars. In this study, fifteen patients used vitamin E on new scars regularly for 12 weeks. Vitamin E was used on one side of the scar, while a common emollient was used on the other side of the scar. Neither the participants, nor the physicians who evaluated the appearances of the scars, knew which was which. The scars were checked at 1, 4, and 12 weeks and the opinions of both the participants and the physicians were taken into account. The conclusion of the study was that vitamin E clearly does not improve the appearance of scars, and in some cases, actually makes them worse.

For these reasons, vitamin E should not be used as a treatment for scars. Instead, people looking to reduce the appearance of a scar should look for a product that contains ingredients proven to help scars fade, such as dimethicone silicone in conjunction with aloe vera and licorice extract.

Blemishes that seem to appear out of nowhere can be stressful. Individuals with a complexion that is prone to acne have likely tried every fad on the market to try to abolish it or diminish its appearance. Keep Your Hair Away From Your Face

Hands Off!
Throughout the day you touch your face, either due to anxiety, adjusting your makeup or simply out of habit. However, this is a very bad habit for those who are prone to acne. Bacteria picked up by your hands can be transferred to your face. This occurs as you touch handles on doors, hard surfaces, your cell phone or other items. If you absolutely must touch your face, be sure to wash your hands before doing so. Additionally, squeezing pimples, white heads or picking scabs from acne should be avoided at all costs, as it damages the skin and may result in acne scars or further hyperpigmentation. Again, your dirty hands could result in further infection of your skin!

Get Plenty of Rest
The way you sleep can influence the state of your health and the condition of your skin. There may be nothing more damaging to your skin than a sleepless night. Your body needs time for recovery from the daytime activities that can exhaust you. In addition to your body recooperating each night, it’s best to change pillow cases frequently (if not daily, every few nights will do.) Your pillow case is a breeding ground for bacteria.

Wash Your Face
Which leads us to our next tip - washing your face before bed is a necessity! It removes the dirt and grime from the day, and if you are a woman, it removes all of the pore clogging makeup.

Use Products for Your Skin Type
When you use skin care products appropriate for your skin type, it should balance your skin. If your skin remains oily or overly dry, then chances are, your skin care products are wrong for you. The wrong skin care products = problem skin. Don’t forget that toners, exfoliating the skin at least once a week and serums are a must!

Relaxation
You are more likely to have an outbreak of blemishes when you are under high amounts of pressure. To help reduce the appearance of acne, you must reduce the level of stress that you experience. You should also try to relax as often as you can. You can slow down the development of acne by using breathing techniques that will help to calm your nervous system.

While you may not be able to remove scars completely, you can get rid of scars, per say, by using a scar treatment in combination with the right diet, exercise and massage.

Fading a Scar

The ultimate goal for most people is to reduce the appearance of their scar. There are many ways to help a scar fade over time and one of the biggest contributors to scar fading is nutrition. By having the right balance of nutrients, the body is able to supply the scar tissue with the nutrients required to heal properly and reduce the appearance of the scar. Just as it is important to ingest these nutrients, regular application of creams with vital nutrients is also helpful to minimize your scar’s appearance.

Beware of the Sun

Some people are under the misconception that regardless of whether or not a scar is new or old, they can simply sit in the sun to even it out or attempt to hide it under a tan. Nothing could be further from the truth. The last thing a scar needs is exposure from the sun.

Scar tissue is not like normal skin. When it comes to how it feels, they way it functions, and its overall appearance it is quite inferior. Old and new scars alike are prone to sunburn, especially when they are brand new, they are less resistant to ultraviolet rays and can permanently be darkened with too much exposure from the sun. This is even truer for people who have dark skin complexions.

To prevent these things from happening, you should take extra care when preparing to be in the sun. All year long you should make every effort to protect your scars from direct sun exposure.

  • Sun block with high SPF should be applied directly onto the scar.
  • Using a water resistant sun block is important, but remember to re-apply every 2 hours.
  • If you are unable to avoid the sun entirely, you should wear sun protective clothing over scars. Clothing with a high UPV of 50 would be just right.

Avoid Smoking

When it comes to skin healing, smoking is known to be linked to complications. Typically, plastic surgeons recommend that at least a month before any plastic surgery procedure, patients give up smoking.

When any cuts or wounds occur, scars simply are a part of the healing process. They need to mature for healing to be completed. This can take many months to happen. Infections can be related to smoking as one of the complications to healing. Scars may worsen if infections should develop.
